Big and Beautiful: Mercedes-Benz S-class Cabriolet to Ride Again

A grand convertible from Germany

Mercedes-Benz is serious about re-establishing the S-class as the standard of luxury—and as part of this strategy, the brand is launching a convertible version of the S-class next year. The droptop iteration of Mercedes' flagship was first confirmed to us by R&D chief Thomas Weber at last year's Frankfurt auto show, and it will look almost exactly like this rendering.

Unlike the 2007 Ocean Drive concept with its four doors, the S-class convertible will be a two-door based on the new and stunningly attractive S-class coupe. It will be fitted with a motorized fabric top. We expect it to be offered with eight-and twelve-cylinder engines as the S550, S600, S63 AMG, and S65 AMG. It will also share all the bells and whistles from the coupe, including the latest iteration of Magic Body Control, which will allow it to lean into curves.

Not since the legendary W111, which went out of production in 1971, has Mercedes-Benz produced an S-class cabriolet. Much larger than the BMW 6-series cabriolet, the Aston Martin Vanquish Volante, and the Maserati Gran Turismo convertible, it will compete directly with the Bentley Continental GTC. Perhaps Mercedes-Benz will even offer a derivative with an upscale Maybach trim level, one capable of taking on the upcoming open-top version of the Rolls-Royce Wraith.
