Audi Considering Building TT Shooting Brake Variant Modeled After Detroit Concept

Audi Contemplating Building Allroad Shooting Brake Concept, Making TT Family

When Audi unveiled the Allroad Shooting Brake concept at the Detroit auto show in January, it was easily identified as a thinly veiled third-generation TT. The brand pulled a similar stunt in 2005 when the second-gen TT was previewed by the Shooting Brake concept. The production-spec TT will bow next month at the Geneva auto show. That should be that, right? Well, not exactly. The four-rings brand is considering building a crossover shooting brake version of the TT based on the Detroit show car.

That's what R&D chief Ulrich Hackenberg told Top Gear. "I can imagine the TT has much more potential than we have used up to now," he said. "That's why we did this Allroad concept. The trend is to smaller crossovers. So for example you could do a crossover TT."

It is not clear whether this would mean a jacked-up TT with off-road body cladding or a traditional shooting brake or some combination of the two. Any such model would make for an interesting addition of the Audi lineup—especially considering the Allroad Shooting Brake concept fooled many observers into thinking it hinted at a Q1 model.

Hackenberg believes a crossover TT could be a winner, saying, "It would have a big group of fans." And he's probably right. Then again, the doomed Project Scorpion would've had a big group of fans, too.
