Report: Scion FR-S/Toyota GT 86 Convertible a No Go

About three seconds after the Scion FR-S/Toyota GT 86 launched alongside its Subaru BRZ twin at the 2011 Tokyo auto show, someone in the crowd spoke the words that were on everyone's mind: "Are they going to make a convertible? That could really give the Miata a run for its money." Toyota then showed the FT-86 Open Concept at the 2013 Geneva auto show, seemingly an affirmative answer sculpted from metal. Guess not.

Automotive News is reporting that Scion/Toyota has ditched its plans for a convertible version, as development and manufacturing would drive the sticker price too high to compete with Mazda's small sports car. It had been scheduled to launch in 2015, at which point it would have had to deal with the forthcoming fourth-gen Miata (as well as its Alfa Romeo Duetto sibling).

Equally as disappointing but not entirely unexpected—we reported similar news more than a year ago—is that the AN report also says there are still no plans for an uprated, turbocharged version of the Toyota cars. The high-performance mantle now falls onto Subaru—we dig our long-term BRZ, but an STI version would be pretty sweet.
