VW applied a liberal dose of that "more-for-less" philosophy to its North American–made Jetta back in 2011 in an effort to boost U.S. sales, which yielded a roomier, but hard-plasticky, compact sedan for less money. While Americans snapped up the decontented Jettas in bigger numbers, the beam axle bringing up the rear of all but the fancy-pants GLI model and the antediluvian five-cylinder engine powering the majority of Jettas dimmed enthusiasm from buyers previously drawn to the car's European driving characteristics.
