| Smart isn't giving up. The diminutive Fortwo, well into the autumn of its life cycle, must carry on until the third generation of the city coupe is launched next year. The brand "desperately needs new product," a North American Mercedes-Benz executive told this writer a number of years ago. Instead of tackling the problem, Smart canned its four-door-vehicle project. What little momentum Smart does have can be attributed to the Fortwo Electric Drive. (Pun perhaps intended.) In order to keep any semblance of interest in the aging gasoline-powered two-seater, the brand now is launching the special-edition Fortwo Cityflame.
