The Greatest—and Most Dangerous—Race Course in the World

The northern loop of the Nürburgring has achieved its legendary status not only because it so closely resembles a winding mountain road, but also because it so closely resembles a winding mountain road on which everybody is driving like they robbed the Tower of London. Called the "Nordschleife" in German, its dozens of corners circle the Nürburg castle in the Eifel Mountains and ribbon over and through 12.9 miles of Western German landscape. With a total elevation change of about 984 feet, it has long uphill and downhill stretches—and limited sight distances—as well as precious little runoff.
