Now isn't that nice? McGrath Acura in Chicago, Illinois, received a free—that's f-r-e-e—salt treatment for the north end of its parking lot yesterday from its neighbor, the Morton Salt Company, when the south wall of the adjacent salt-storage facility collapsed. And it hadn't even snowed! Unfortunately, a few of the dealership's vehicles were also treated to a heaping dose of white granulated condiment. And some bricks. McGrath was also treated to an overwhelming dose of irony, thanks to Morton Salt's tag line "When it rains, it pours," which is emblazoned on the roof of the doomed storage building.
Luckily, no one was hurt in the cave-in, which is probably why reports on the event from the Chicago Tribune and the Chicago Sun-Times are sprinkled with amusing quips. A firefighter who responded to the scene found Morton's tag line too delicious to pass up, tossing it out there for the Tribune. A witness told the Sun-Times he hoped the dealership's now-salt-covered Acuras were rustproofed. Things were slightly less funny for about a dozen cars, mostly Acura and Honda products, which were partially or entirely buried by Morton's flagship product and the wall that used to contain it. Some of the rides belonged to customers and were awaiting service, but several were brand-new dealer stock.

Early speculation pegs overfilling of the building as the cause of the collapse. Miraculously, the 100-year-old Morton Salt girl—her likeness is plastered across the Morton facility's roof, which faces Interstate 94 and a local train line—survived the incident unscathed. As the Acuras were overcome with the spice of life, the girl had her back turned to the turmoil, a purple umbrella blithely resting on her shoulder. If only those cars had a big umbrella to protect them from receiving something like a 40,763-percent recommended dose of sodium.
