QOTD: Ram Beats Chevrolet For The First Time Since 1999, GM Gets Pouty

2014-RAM-1500-Eco-Diesel-Exterior-001

For the first time since 1999, Ram trucks outsold Chevrolet in a monthly sales period, with Ram edging out the bowtie brand by just 285 trucks.

With 42,532 trucks sold in March, Ram just edged out Chevy's 42,247 trucks, but lagged Ford, which moved just under 71,000 F-Series trucks.

GM spokesman Jim Cain issued a rather acid-tongued statement to Automotive News, telling the trade paper

"The 1980s called. They want their marketing strategy back…It's really easy to deeply discount your truck, mine the subprime market and offer cheap lease deals to buy market share."

Although I am a dubious authority figure when it comes to withholding sharply worded responses, I can't help but wince when I see this quote by Cain, as well as his other comments about the Chevrolet Colorado rendering other trucks "obsolete". Clearly, things aren't going well over in GM's truck department, but reacting with a response best left for a "deep background" conversation at a Detroit-area watering hole only serves to further telegraph that fact.

2016 Volvo XC90 First Ride: We Sit Shotgun in the First All-New XC90 in 12 Years

2016 Volvo XC90
The financial crisis might now be receding into memory, but the lingering effects continue. Volvo, for one, was deeply affected by the downturn, as Ford jettisoned it during the depths of that American company's problems. The Swedish automaker ended up being purchased by Geely, the up and coming Chinese company, and after several years of management churn, Volvo now seems to be on a stable path, with Swedish management in place and a considerable degree of independence. READ MORE ››

According to Analyst, There’ll Be Just Six Automakers in 20 Years

According to Analyst, There'll Be Just Six Automakers in 20 Years

A month after Morgan Stanley wrote an opus that boosted Tesla's share price, the investment bank is back with another tome that's starting to smell like a conspiracy theory. Because of Tesla and technology firms, it says, the world will only know six automakers within the next 15 to 20 years.

According to chief auto analyst Adam Jonas—the man who predicted "100-percent autonomous [vehicle] penetration" in a "utopian society" within that same time—the U.S. auto industry is unprepared for survival. "We believe the radically changing landscape of autos requires a commensurate change of thinking in Detroit if the domestic OEMs, as we have traditionally known them, are to remain relevant 15 or 20 years from now," Jonas said in a report to Morgan Stanley subscribers, as quoted by the Detroit News. "The world has too many car companies: We cover nearly 30 auto assemblers globally across eight countries. In our opinion, the balance of economic, competitive, and technological forces will ultimately consolidate this figure to five or six players."

Following this theory, we could imagine a few giants falling. PSA Peugeot Citroen, facing declining government subsidies and dropping European sales, isn't any beacon of hope. Geely could wipe out Volvo and absorb the engineering into its own branded cars. General Motors could screw itself into a second bankruptcy.

"There are several auto firms with the vision to make it to that final select group," he said. "Others are more distracted by the issues of the day, working diligently towards the next engineering cycle."

Indeed, Jonas isn't without serious precedent. Six major domestic marques have perished since Oldsmobile died in 2001, as have Maybach and Saab, the latter of which is on partial life support. GM and Chrysler were nearly wiped out in 2009. Certainly, we could see major automakers deleting a few of their sub brands. Lincoln, Scion and Smart are the most obvious, and if we're going for broke, GMC and Buick could die an easy death. Suzuki recently disappeared from the U.S. market and Mitsubishi is no beacon of health, either.

But with car sales growing—last year, automakers sold more than 62.6 million passenger vehicles worldwide—there's more than enough space for the current players to grab a meaty slice. The market has recovered nicely since the recession, and while the auto industry will probably clean house in another 20 years, it's extremely alarmist to think we'll be left with just six brands.

Maybe we should get Jonas a Car and Driver subscription?

Puppy Potential: Volkswagen Teams With RSPCA to Teach Dogs to Drive

Volkswagen-RSPCA Amarok

Who knew the kind of chauffeur-like potential your dog had? Indeed, behind that drooling, tail-chasing, and butt-sniffing veneer lies some real driving acumen. Just ask Volkswagen and the Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (RSPCA) in the U.K., which have teamed up to train three rescue pups—Tulip, Jacob, and Harry—to drive an Amarok pickup. We aren't sure what we're more jealous of: the fact that these dogs get to drive the awesome Amarok, or that VW managed to work with the RSPCA without Sarah Mclachlan guilting up the place.

Volkswagen-RSPCA Amarok

The project serves to show how clever dogs—rescue or otherwise—can be, but that's not to say training the big-brained four-legged trio to drive was easy. See, dogs have curious body structures compared to humans, and most cars are designed to accommodate hind-leg walkers. Thus, VW devised a unique set of leg extensions for the puppies' hind legs to operate the pedals, while their front paws manipulate the steering wheel and the shift lever. The Amarok's top speed was limited "for safety reasons," likely because the dogs might be compelled to roll down the windows and poke their heads out at speed.

Fittingly, Volkswagen has affixed the specially equipped Amarok pickup with the license plate "FR5T APR." We hear Kia might be looking to copy VW's efforts with one of its new K900 luxury cars, but company representatives couldn't confirm the rumor to us.

David Brown Auto’s Speedback Embodies British Sports Cars Past and Present

David Brown Auto's Speedback Embodies British Sports Cars Past and Present

Considering its unmistakable retro styling and British provenance, you'd be forgiven for assuming the David Brown Automotive Speedback GT might share some bloodlines with Aston Martin. The fact that the car's benefactor shares a name with Aston founder David Brown—the famous marque's "DB" lineage is no coincidence—certainly doesn't do much to dispel the notion, but it just isn't so. The David Brown responsible for the Speedback GT that debuted in London last week is an entrepreneur with a background in engineering, manufacturing, and, most recently, brewing. His four-wheeled creation is the realization of his long-held dream of creating a car that was "designed, engineered, and hand-crafted in Britain."

Styling of the Speedback GT was entrusted to chief designer Alan Mobberley. His team honed the Speedback GT's shape with equal parts old- and new-school methods, first crafting full-scale clay models and then digitizing them in the name of aerodynamics and creating production-ready bodywork templates. Construction also combines techniques new and old, using computer-controlled milling machines to create traditional forming bucks, that in turn serve as a physical guide for craftsmen to reference while hand shaping the car's outer surface with an English wheel. In keeping with the hand-crafted theme, the company says more than 120 man-hours go in to the exterior finish alone.

David Brown Automotive Speedback
The interior is just as you expect, trimmed extensively in leather, hand-crafted wood veneers, and aluminum finishes to create—or one might say, recreate—traditional old-world luxury.

Built on the aging architecture of the Jaguar XXR, the Speedback GT calls on the XKR's 510-hp, supercharged 5.0-liter V-8 to provide forward momentum. The coupe is rear-wheel drive and also employs the six-speed automatic transmission from the Jag. David Brown Automotive is quoting a 0-to-60-mph time of 4.6 seconds and a top speed of 155 mph, which, depending on the Speedback's as-yet undisclosed weight figure, seems perfectly achievable.

We're thrilled that there's an individual with the means to navigate the shark-infested waters of the low-volume car business and keep alive the tradition of fitting bespoke bodywork to existing architecture. Here's hoping that Mr. Brown's accountants share his enthusiasm.

Define “Restore-Able:” Sixth Corvette Raised from Sinkhole, Looks Terrible

Either the National Corvette Museum is playing one hell of an April Fool's joke, or it's exceptionally serious about restoring all eight of the Vettes swallowed up by a sinkhole this February. We're talking, of course, about the museum's Facebook post declaring: "While hurt, it will be saved!" in reference to the ZR1 Spyder concept it just raised from the sinkhole's depths. Take a good look at the photo above—does that car look salvageable?

Much like how you can milk anything with nipples, as the saying goes, we suppose you can restore anything from the most meager of leftover scraps. Hey, at least the ZR1 Spyder has wheels and, uh, some engine, but as far as we can tell, its "restoration" would be easier if GM simply made a new one. So far, the ZR1 Spyder is the sixth Corvette to be raised from the sinkhole, following the ZR1 Blue Devil, 1993 40th Anniversary coupe, 1962 coupe, 1992 1,000,000th Corvette, and the 1984 PPG Pace Car.

GM CEO Testifies Before Congressional Panel on Ignition Switch Recalls

GMCEOMaryBarra

GM CEO Mary Barra testified this afternoon before a U.S. House of Representatives subcommittee investigating the automaker's recall of more than 2.5 million vehicles worldwide for faulty ignition switches that have been blamed in at least 31 crashes and 13 deaths. House committee members took turns grilling Barra with questions focusing heavily on when it came to the automaker's attention that faulty switches had been used in the 2003-10 Saturn Ion and 2007-10 Sky, the 2006-10 Pontiac Solstice and 2005-10 G5, and the 2006-11 Chevrolet HHR and 2005-07 Cobalt, and why after repeated complaints and defect discoveries in subsequent years the faulty ignition switches continued to be used. Panel members also attempted to get to the bottom of how numerous communication breakdowns between GM and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration had occurred.

More GM Ignition Recall News on Cars.com

After reiterating in her opening statement her earlier apology to the victims of the ignition switch problem and their families, Barra repeatedly responded to subcommittee members' questions by saying she would have answers only after GM completed its ongoing internal investigation. One new piece of information Barra did report to House members was that GM has hired lawyer Kenneth Feinberg, who has overseen the victim-compensation process after the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks, the BP oil spill and the Boston Marathon bombing.

The ignition switch recall already involves more than 2.5 million vehicles worldwide, with the most recent expansion of nearly 900,000 vehicles announced last week. Meanwhile, millions more GM vehicles have been recalled for problems unrelated to the ignition switch issue — first announced in February — as the automaker looks to make a good on a public promise to overhaul its safety-assurance procedures. That's after it came to light that GM had first discovered the problem as far back as 2001 during preproduction, canceled a redesigned key four years later and failed to issue a recall until just recently. On March 18, Barra announced that she had appointed company veteran Jeff Boyer to the role of safety chief to oversee safety development of all vehicle systems, including confirmation and validation of safety performance and post-sale activities, particularly recalls.

David Friedman, acting administrator for the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, will also testify and is expected to point the finger at GM for not providing more data to the agency. Get the full story from the Detroit News, here.
