General Motors Puts Stop-Sale & Recall On Chevrolet Cruze Due To Axle Failure [W/ Full Text]

2014-Chevrolet-CruzeRS-010-medium
Last weekend, Chevrolet issued a stop-sale 2013-2014 Chevrolet Cruze equipped with the 1.4L turbo-four with no initial reason for the action. A stop-sale is an order given by a manufacturer to dealers to cease the sales of a specific model of car to repair a problem. It can be anything from minor quality issues, up to major mechanical maladies. While not an uncommon event, this comes on the heels of a tidal wave of expanded recalls and investigations centered around the maligned Delta-Platform cars. TTAC was able to obtain a copy of the stop-sale notice for the B&B, which pinpoints the failure to the front-passenger half-shaft not meeting GM specifications, with the half-shafts possibly fracturing as the result.

It is notable that this is the second time the Cruze was recalled for this exact issue last September. In GM's letter to the NHTSA on September 23, 2013, GM noted the response time from the initial reports in July of 2013 to the initial stop-sale and recall in September of 2013 after receiving field report of the half-shafts breaking. GM found that poor quality control from the parts supplier lead to micro fractures inside the shaft. It's unknown at this time why GM has again initiated this recall, but GM plans to release a full chronology in two weeks.

Below is a full text copy of the current stop-sale notice to dealers, and a partial copy of the recall letter which details the failure; the portion of the document left it is merely repair instructions for the technician.

PRODUCT SAFETY RECALL

SUBJECT: Front Axle Right Half Shaft Fracture

MODELS: 2013-2014 Chevrolet Cruze Equipped with 1.4L Turbo Engine (LUV)

CONDITION

General Motors has decided that a defect which relates to motor vehicle safety exists in some 2013-2014 model year Chevrolet Cruze vehicles, equipped with a 1.4L turbo engine (LUV). The interconnecting tubular bar on the front right axle half shaft on some of these vehicles may not meet GM specification and could fracture and separate. If this occurs while driving the vehicle, steering and braking control would be maintained; however, the vehicle would lose power to the wheels and would coast to a stop. If a vehicle with a fractured half shaft is parked on an incline without the parking brake applied, the vehicle could move unexpectedly, resulting in a possible crash or injury to pedestrians.

CORRECTION

Dealers are to inspect and, if necessary, replace the half shaft.

Top 10 Best-Selling Cars: March 2014

Toyota-camry

The final month of winter continued to be a challenging one for many automakers. Poor weather through large swaths of the country dampened sales in many regions buried under snow and ice. March capped off a weak sales quarter, which saw inventories swell and incentive spending boosted to lure customers into showrooms. The past month proved that signs of spring are finally upon us, and for some automakers the thaw came early to dealers across the U.S., especially those selling trucks and luxury cars.

Top 10 Best-Selling Cars: February 2014

In fact, trucks led much of the sales gains for March, with especially strong performances from Ram, Ford and Toyota. The Ram brand had its best month for pickup sales in a decade, and the brand as a whole posted a 29 percent gain year-over-year in March versus March 2013. Ford's F-Series was up as well, jumping 5.1 percent for the month, while Toyota's Tundra posted its best sales month since August 2008. The Chevrolet Silverado saw a 6.8 percent gain, while the GMC Sierra sales were up by 22 percent.

Luxury brands did quite well too, with nearly every brand reporting higher sales for March — some of them significantly higher. By percentage gain, Lincoln actually led the field with a 31 percent boost thanks to improved sales of the MKZ — but March's volume of less than 9,000 vehicles for the whole brand still makes Lincoln a fringe player. Lexus saw sales climb 23 percent; BMW was up 19 percent, and even Porsche saw a 9 percent improvement compared with March 2013. Acura saw a gain of nearly 15 percent, driven by the redesigned MDX, which itself was up more than 80 percent from March 2013. Only Cadillac saw a decline; SRX and CTS gains weren't enough to overcome significant drops in the ATS, XTS and Escalade sales.

The popular midsize sedan class saw a mixed performance compared to February's lackluster sales. Leading the way again is the Toyota Camry with an 11.4 percent climb to just less than 42,000 cars over March 2013's numbers. The Camry reclaimed the best-selling title for March from the Nissan Altima. The Altima saw a minor 4.9 percent drop to stay in second place in the midsize sedan category, but Ford's Fusion had its best sales month ever, up 8.8 percent to nearly 33,000 cars for the month. The Honda Accord saw a sales decline of 7 percent to just less than 34,000 cars, nearly tying the Fusion. But that improvement in Fusion sales may have come at the expense of other Ford cars, with sales of the Focus, Fiesta and Taurus lagging.

General Motors' recall woes and congressional hearings didn't seem to dampen March sales, with the company posting a 4.1 percent overall gain for the month. Sales of the company's Chevrolet cars didn't seem to be appreciably affected either, with the Malibu, Cruze, Sonic and Spark all posting gains. The Corvette was especially popular with a 230 percent jump, despite the harsh winter conditions in much of the country. With attention on the GM recalls only getting stronger, we'll see how GM fares in April.

From the C/D Archives: Our Original 1961 Jaguar E-type Road Test!

1961 Jaguar E-Type

To the British motor industry, the name of Jaguar spells success: success on the most famous racing circuits in the world, and commercial success on every market where the make has been offered. What is the secret of this success? That question is probably best answered by the words of a well-known British ex-racing driver: "Jaguar may not be the best car of its class in the world, but it is incontestably the least expensive of the GOOD cars." Aston Martin Teaming Up With Daimler For Premium SUV

SC06_Aston_Martin_Vanquish_green

First Bentley, now Aston Martin wants an SUV for their lineup, with plans to team up with Daimler to make that vision reality.

Bloomberg reports the plan is related to a 5 percent stake in Aston Martin sold to Daimler last year in return for sharing technology with the English automaker, such as Mercedes AMG building V8 engines with Aston in the latter's upcoming models.

Currently, talks are at the early stages, with signs of the new SUV not expected to come for another three years at the earliest. Aston is also debating whether or not to build a crossover using its own technology.

As for Aston overall, the automaker aims to sell 7,000 cars annually by 2016 by catering to demand in North American, South American and Asian markets.

Band of Prancing Horses: Future Alfas Could Wield Ferrari Power

Ferrari Engine

Desperate times call for desperate measures, and Fiat is desperately trying to make its beleaguered Alfa Romeo brand relevant in this millennium. After years of mediocre products and efforts to return to the U.S. market that can best be described as slapdash, Fiat may resort to playing its ultimate race card, as in injecting future Alfa products with fire-breathing Ferrari engines.

A year ago we reported that Alfa was developing a mid-size, rear-drive sedan and coupe based on the Maserati Ghibli that would be powered by Ferrari-tuned turbocharged V-6s. Now, a report in Automotive News echoes our previous coverage and adds that this new lineup of rear-drive offerings would represent a complete reboot of the Alfa Romeo lineup.

Meanwhile, we sort of pity Ferrari. The formerly purebred automaker once simply sold cars to support its racing habit and that was that. But in recent years, Ferrari has been directed to do what Enzo might have considered unthinkable, most notably providing engines to its one-time nemesis, Maserati, and now coming up with powertrains for lowly Alfa. Ferrari is still a long way from becoming Fiat's AMG, but these latest moves could be taking it in that direction.

About the Lists

The Fastest- and Slowest-Selling Cars list reports the average number of days it takes to sell models from the day they arrive on the lot until the final paperwork is signed by a buyer. This is not a days-of-inventory list like you may find on other websites. With lots mostly clear of 2013 models, we look exclusively at 2014 and 2015 models. We call the fastest-sellers Movers and the slowest ones Losers.

For Movers, we only list vehicles that pass a certain threshold of sales in order to weed out limited editions, ultra-high-performance cars and others that might skew the numbers or otherwise inaccurately portray popularity. To highlight all slow sellers, losers have no such threshold.

Our Picks highlight cars that take a significant time before they're sold and might be overlooked by shoppers. Dealers could be more motivated to sell these cars.

The Etsy Bitsy Hatchback: Honda Introduces the 2015 Fit Kit for Hipster DIYers

The Etsy Bitsy Hatchback: Honda Introduces the 2015 Fit Kit for Hipster DIYers

Do you like making your own clothing using only yarn spun from responsibly sourced sheep's wool? How about ironic mustaches—you a fan? If you like to brew your own kombucha—or you even know what kombucha is in the first place—Honda has the car for you: The 2015 Fit. Well, actually, it's the 2015 Fit Kit, and it's designed for young people from Portland to Austin with a penchant for crafting things.

That's because unlike a regular 2015 Fit, which Honda will happily assemble for you in its new Mexican production facility, the build-it-yourself Fit Kit is for those among us who want "a deeper relationship with the goods they use." Just 200,000 individual parts separate the hardy among us from a brand new Fit, and Honda says the kit will be sold for much, much less than the fully assembled version.

In a video released by Honda, which you can watch below, a Gen Y couple eagerly takes delivery of their new Fit Kit—which arrives via drone—in their hip apartment. Over several minutes, the couple insists that society's view of young people as useless touch-screen thumb twiddlers is misguided, and that Millennials just dig building things themselves. You shouldn't be daunted, however, by the hipsters' meager progress on the Fit—they manage only to install the headrests on the front seats—because everyone knows young people are neither useless nor capable of building a car in three minutes.
