Name That Shifter, No. 170: 1991 BMW 850i

Name That Shifter

1991 BMW 850i

Shifter No 170On Monday, we presented this week's shifter and asked you to identify the make and model of the vehicle whence it came. Repeat winner Ram Narayan took no time at all identifying the stick as belonging to 1991 BMW 850i.

We road-tested the 850i pictured here in our August 1990 issue. The successor to the 6-series, BMW's 8-series was, essentially, its overpriced flagship. Although it featured a brand-new rear suspension, the 850i's 296-hp V-12 engine was lifted straight from the 750iL sedan. The borrowed powerplant was good for a 6.1-second 0–60 time and a top speed of 155 mph. But the car's best attribute, of course was its brawny style—it looked the wheeled equivalent of Sylvester Stallone in an immaculately tailored suit.
