Fun fact: Volkswagen was the first carmaker to have an assembly plant in the U.S. when it purchased a former Chrysler plant in 1978. While that plant ultimately failed, the automaker returned to our shores with a new, large plant in Chattanooga, Tenn., that represents a $1 billion investment by the German carmaker.
