Mercedes-Benz to Debut New GL-class SUV Next Month [New York Auto Show]

The second-generation Mercedes-Benz GL will debut at the 2012 New York auto show in just a few weeks. (The outgoing car is pictured above.)

Based on the same architecture that underpins the new ML, the next GL will again sport three rows of seats but should see bumps in the usual areas: interior space, fuel efficiency, and refinement. An optional diesel V-6 will return to the stable, as the dizzler accounted for almost 40 percent of GL sales last year. On the gasoline front, expect Benz's current corporate V-8—a twin-turbo 4.7-liter mill making more than 400 hp—to power a new GL550. Without a less-powerful V-8 in the lineup right now, the GL450 may bite the dust; we'll know for sure in a few weeks.

Sales will begin later this year, with prices in the same ballpark as the current model's $63,445 starting sticker.
