2012 Coda Sedan Priced at $37,250

The 2012 Coda electric sedan finally went on sale in California this week with a starting price of $37,250, excluding an $895 destination fee. The pricing is a significant drop from earlier estimates of $44,900, though it's still more expensive than the 2012 Nissan Leaf, which starts at $35,200. The Coda qualifies for California's $2,500 EV rebate and the federal government's $7,500 tax credit, giving the sedan a possible $27,250 price tag. The model now on sale is slightly smaller and less powerful than the one that Coda showed off originally, according to Consumer Reports. For the price, you get an electric motor making 134 horsepower and 221 pounds-feet of torque that's mated to a single-speed transmission. The electric motor is capable of an electronically limited 85 mph and can be charged in six hours with a 240-volt charger. The Coda also comes with a 7-inch touch-screen and GPS navigation standard. The 31-kilowatt/hour lithium-ion-phosphate battery pack gives the Coda an EPA-estimated range of 88 miles on a single charge. That's better than the Leaf's estimated range of 73 miles. The Coda is currently available for test drives and purchase in Los Angeles, San Francisco, San Diego and Irvine, Calif. More cities will follow.
